Melanie Manchot was commissioned to produce a series of photographs and a video work for the Backstage Centre in Purfleet, Essex, which opened in 2012, focusing on this new building's role and purpose.
Manchot felt that engagement with local communities was key to the commission, and the project taps into the creative potential of young people passionate about the practices that are at the heart of the building. The project involved young musicians from the Thurrock Youth Orchestra, dancers from Jacqui Couves Tilbury Dance School, as well as a local Parkour runner and drummer.
The backstage Centre is London's newest production, rehearsal and training facility. Designed in consultation with industry experts it offers production accommodation that ranges from large-scale theatre and opera to arena-scale band rehearsals.
