cambridge north

commissioner: chesterton partnership

artist: matthew darbyshire

Commissioned by the Chesterton Partnership, Matthew Darbyshire’s sculpture ‘Hercules Meets Galatea’ creates a dynamic new focus in front of Cambridge’s new station Cambridge North.  The sculpture is the first of a series of ambitious art commissions planned as part of the ongoing Cambridge North development.

The sculpture depicts a fictional encounter between two Greco-Roman characters that explores analogue and digital making methods.  Challenging the myth, Galatea’s poise and digital production imply power and perfection over Hercules’ somewhat shakier manifestation.

‘Hercules meets Galatea’ is intended to be accessible, encouraging local people, visitors, and station users to enjoy and debate the work in this exciting new city context.
