Cambridge Assessment commissioned Vong Phaophanit and Claire Oboussier to make a work that would be integral to their new headquarters building on Shaftesbury Road in Cambridge.
The opportunity was highly significant due to the organisations international profile, and the site’s potential to create a new gateway to the City.
The artists worked closely with Eric Parry Architects over a period of three years on the development of a glazed, illuminated tower, and a work incorporated into the glazing and structure around the main entrance to the building. Formed of images created from multiple strata of text drawn from a wide range of sources the final works make a significant contribution to Cambridge’s public realm.
An important characteristic of the project was the wide-ranging public engagement programme which involved staff, local residents, local groups, schools and students ensuring its success and acceptance.
